WILSON, N.C. — And, they’re off! — What better way to signal the efforts of enthusiastic runners as they rush to take the lead in the “Barton College/Dick’s Hot Dog Dash and Weenie Walk,” scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, April 2, at 3:30 p.m.  The approximate two-mile run, sponsored by the Barton College Student Government Association, in partnership with Dick’s Hot Dog Stand, is being held to help raise funds for “Stop Hunger Now,” an international hunger relief agency that coordinates the distribution of food and other life-saving aid around the world. Barton Students To Package 40,000 Meals On April 28 To Help “Stop Hunger Now”

WILSON, N.C. — For the fourth consecutive year, the Barton College Student Government Association has raised awareness and funding on campus and throughout the Wilson community for the STOP HUNGER NOW international project. During their first year in 2008, the SGA raised enough funding to package 10,000 meals. By year three, the students had “raised the bar” to package 40,000 meals in April 2010.  On Thursday, April 28, Barton students, faculty, and staff will once again package 40,000 meals for STOP HUNGER NOW. Barton College students and employees sporting white and red t-shirts and tightly laced running shoes gathered at the Alumni Bell Tower on April 8 for the second annual Barton College / Dick’s Hot Dog Dash to benefit the April 29 meal packaging event for STOP HUNGER NOW.  Newly added to the event this year was the Weenie Walk, allowing walkers to participate with the runners. Runners and walkers assembled at the Alumni Bell Tower and, at the word “Go!”, raced to Wilson landmark Dick’s Hot Dog Stand to eat three hot dog halves with all the fixings.  Once they had devoured their meals, the racers headed back to the bell […]

Could you spare a quarter? One quarter equals one nourishing meal for a hungry child. Last year, Barton College, the Wilson area Rotary Clubs, and the Wilson community raised enough funds to support the packaging of 25,000 meals for children through the STOP HUNGER NOW project. For the third consecutive year, Barton College is teaming with the Wilson Rotary Club, churches, and other organizations to raise $12,500 to double last year’s goal and produce 50,000 meals during the on-campus packaging event scheduled for April 29. Students and Staff Help “Stop Hunger Now”

Wilson, N.C. – Barton students and employees in conjunction with the Wilson Rotary Club joined forces with relief organization Stop Hunger Now to pack 10,000 meals for the world’s hungry on April 23. Hosted in Barton College’s Hardy Alumni Hall, assembly stations buzzed with activity and laughter as volunteers filled, weighed, sealed, and boxed the food. Periodically loud cheers punctuated the clamor as a gong sounded for every fifth box completed. Each box, containing 36 bags of food, provided enough for 216 meals. The food itself was a mix of rice, textured soy flour, dehydrated vegetables, and a chicken-flavored vegetarian powder. With an efficient assembly system and enthusiastic volunteers, the […]

Campus Combats Hunger

Wilson, N.C. – Members of the Barton College community will be packing meals on Wednesday, April 23, to help Stop Hunger Now feed hungry people around the world. Meeting in the multipurpose room of Hardy Alumni Hall, participants will work from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. to reach their goal of 10,000 meals packed. This event provides a great opportunity for outreach, and campus groups are encouraged to participate.
