"High Desert II" Pastel Artwork“In this course, students will explore the wonderful medium of soft pastel,” shares Maureen O’Neill, assistant professor of art and director of exhibitions and educational programming at Barton College. “Motif exploration will be encouraged and will include direct observation, photographic references, and abstraction. Students will be guided through the different approaches and given specific assignments to help facilitate the completion of a series of pastel drawings by the end of the term. All levels of experience are welcome.”

No experience is necessary to enroll in the course; however, Pastel will be a good course for both beginners and experienced artmakers. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to demonstrate a deeper understanding of pastel techniques and materials.

Supplies needed for the course include pastels (recommended: Soft Sennelier half-sticks 40 count, other good brands include – Unison, Schminke, Richeson); hard pastel set: NuPastel, Rembrandt (good for underpainting), paper (Art Spectrum paper, Sennelier sanded paper), pastel spray fixative, soft charcoal, and a sketchbook.
