Hackney Library to Host Presentation About the Legendary Sallie B. Howard on Thursday, Feb. 29

WILSON, N.C. — February 26, 2024 — In celebration of Black History Month, the Willis N. Hackney Library at Barton College is pleased to host a dramatic presentation showcasing the life and legacy of the late Wilsonian actor and educator Sallie B. Howard.  Dr. JoAnne Woodard, founder of the Sallie B. Howard School of Arts & Science, will be the featured speaker. The event will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 29, in Hackney Library.

Dr. Joanne Woodard Dr. Woodard’s presentation will focus on the inspiring story of “Sallie B. Howard: Her Passion, Her Purpose.”  “Hear from her own voice, feel her spirit, and enjoy a dramatic presentation of her legacy,” shares Dr. Woodard.  Sallie B. Howard Charter School seniors will also lend their voices in song to accompany this very special presentation.

Dr. Woodard is the founder and executive director of Sallie B. Howard School of Arts & Science, a free, K-12 public charter school, established in 1997 in Wilson, that serves more  than 1,200 students. She is the driving force behind the school’s unique arts and science-based curriculum, its culturally diverse faculty and student body, and its study abroad program, which sends students to countries such as China, India, Africa, and Australia.

A native of Wilson, Dr. Woodard received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Bennett College in 1969 and a master’s degree and Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) in 1975.

This event is sponsored by Barton College’s Aging Studies Program and the Sallie B. Howard Charter School.  It is open to the public at no charge, and the Wilson community is encouraged to attend.
