Gregg DeMar Named New Chair of the Barton College Board of Trustees

WILSON, N.C. — At the fall 2011 meeting of the Barton College Board of Trustees, Gregg A. DeMar was elected and installed as the new Chair of the Board.

“We are most fortunate to have Gregg DeMar leading the College’s Board of Trustees,” said Dr. Norval C. Kneten, president of Barton College. “His keen business acumen and leadership experience will serve Barton well into its future. He is a valued trustee among his peers on the Board, and I am pleased to have this opportunity to work with him as we move Barton College into its promising future.”

Recently retired from the IBM Corporation after completing 34 years of service, DeMar’s last assignment was Managing Director for the Communications Sector in New York where he had overall responsibility for leading and integrating IBM business activities across all IBM units in support of a Fortune 10 Communications Industry Corporate Client.

“I am very appreciative of the opportunity to serve Barton as Chair of the Board of Trustees and to follow the solid leadership examples of the past Board Chairs,” shared DeMar. “Barton is an outstanding institution of higher learning with rich traditions, excellent academics, and the achievement of strong learning outcomes. I look forward to the continued growth and development of the College and the collective work and accomplishments ahead on the Barton Strategic Plan.”

Joining IBM in 1976, DeMar held a number of sales, management, and executive positions in Baton Rouge, Dallas, Raleigh, Detroit, and New York. Past assignments included director of marketing, trading area general manager, vice president – business partners channels, area general manager, vice president – worldwide UNIX server sales, and vice president – personal systems customer segment marketing. DeMar also served as IBM’s Diversity Campus Executive for Southern University in Baton Rouge, La.

DeMar is a member of Louisiana State University’s College of Sciences Advisory Council. He has served as the Chair of the Trustee Ministry of his church, Union Baptist Church of Stamford, Conn., since 2005.

As a member of the Board of Trustees of Barton College, DeMar has served as a member of the Finance, Investment, and Trusteeship committees and as Chair of the School of Business Task Force.

The son of Leontine and William DeMar of New Orleans, La., DeMar earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Engineering and Applied Physics from Harvard University.

DeMar currently makes his home in Stamford, Conn., with his wife, the former Hyacinth Rodney of New Orleans, La.  They have three children: Brent DeMar of Chicago, Ill.; Troy DeMar of Norwalk, Conn.; and Keri DeMar of New York, N.Y.
