WILSON, N.C. — Poet Kim Garcia will be featured at the next Victor R. Small Writers Series lecture at Barton College scheduled for Monday, April 2. The event will be held in The Sam and Marjorie Ragan Writing Center at 7:30 p.m., and the community is invited to attend. There is no charge for this program.
Garcia’s poetry collection “Madonna Magdalene” was published by Turning Point Books in fall 2006. With the sensual lushness of the Song of Solomon, [Garcia’s poetry collection] meditates on passion and the bruised heart’s negotiations with love, through the Madonnas and Magdalenes of history and within us. Garcia’s writing technique is described as an employment of dramatic monologues that is reminiscent of the Psalms in their yearning humanity, while “Madonna Magdalene” stirs the reader to consider what bright flowers arise from desire and consent.

Garcia’s poetry has appeared in a number of journals including the “Harvard Divinity Bulletin,” “Atlanta Review,” “Rosebud,” “Nimrod,” “Cimaroon Review,” “Mississippi Review,” and “Brightleaf.”
She is the recipient of an Associated Writing Programs Introductory Writing Award, a Hambridge Fellowship, an Oregon Individual Arts Grant, and the Cambor Fellowship from the University of Houston.
A graduate of Reed College, Garcia teaches creative writing at Boston College. She is completing a Master of Fine Arts degree in Poetry at the University of Houston.
