WILSON, N.C. — November 3, 2017 — “Tracking Childe Hassam: An American Impressionist on the Isles of Shoals” will be the focus of Barton Art Galleries’ upcoming lecture by John W. Coffey, Deputy Director for Collections and Research and Curator of American and Modern Art at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh. A 6:30 p.m. reception on Thursday, Nov. 16, will open the evening event in the Barton Art Galleries in Case Art Building on the Barton College campus. Coffey’s lecture will follow at 7 p.m. This event is open to the public at no charge, and the community is invited to attend.

Coffey will discuss the works of American impressionist painter Childe Hassam, who spent nearly 30 summers painting on Appledore, the largest island in the Isles of Shoals off the coast of New Hampshire and Maine. Hassam’s paintings of the sea and rocks and the vibrant marine sunsets are among the finest achievements of American impressionism. Coffey’s lecture, based on four years of research and field work on Appledore, will explore how the artist experienced and re-imagined this much-storied island. Photographs will compare the real Appledore with the fantasy isle of Hassam’s paintings.
