Barrett Martin to be Featured Speaker at Barton’s 114th Opening Convocation

WILSON, N.C. — Barton College is pleased to announce alumnus Dr. Barrett Martin, class of 2009, as the featured speaker for the 114th Opening Convocation.  The annual campus event is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 11 a.m. in Howard Chapel.

A significant tradition at Barton College, Convocation signifies the official opening of the academic year, and provides a particularly meaningful milestone for freshmen as they are ushered into the Barton Experience.

“We are delighted to welcome Dr. Barrett Martin as the featured alumni speaker for Barton’s 114th Convocation,” said Dr. Gary Daynes, provost of the college and vice president for academic affairs. “Barrett was an outstanding student and an outstanding baseball player while he was at Barton. His excellence in the classroom and on the field was the result of his hard work, passion, and perseverance. Those characteristics have led to his post-graduation success. And, they are key to the success of all Barton students. I am excited to have Barrett share his story with our students as they begin their time at Barton.”

A native of Willow Spring, Martin graduated from Wake Christian Academy, and continued his education at Barton College, his parents’ alma mater. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, and was a catcher for the Barton Baseball Team throughout his four-year college career. He completed his Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry and currently practices Optometry at Johnson Optometric Associates, with offices in Garner and Fuquay-Varina.

He and his wife Meredith, also a Barton graduate, make their home in Willow Spring with their one-year-old daughter, Lucy.
