Celebrate Local Voices at Barton College’s Homegrown Writers Series on Sept. 23

WILSON, N.C. — September 3, 2025 — Barton College’s Homegrown Writers Series will return this fall, featuring writers from the Barton College community. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 4:30 p.m. in the Barton Art Galleries of the Case Art Building. Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend.

This year’s featured writers include Kathy Daughety, Rachel K. Deale, Brent Canle, and Katherine Lindfors.

Michael K. Brantley, Elizabeth H. Jordan Chair of Southern Literature and Associate Professor of English at Barton, continues to guide this series, now in its third year.

“We are excited to showcase the work of two of our professors, and a staff member who is a  recent graduate, and then cap it off with the beloved Kathy Daughety,” Brantley said. “Kathy grew up on the campus, was a student, and served as the voice of the college for many years. She’s tremendously modest, but has such a gift for knowing the story and the best way to tell it.”

The Homegrown Writers Series has become a fall tradition, offering an opportunity for readers and listeners to gather in the Barton Art Galleries to experience poetry, fiction, and nonfiction in an intimate setting. Each spring, the program continues with a companion event showcasing the work of Barton student writers.

“We have so many talented writers on campus who are willing to share their work and that makes this such a fun event,” Brantley added. “The idea is for faculty to lead in the fall, with students taking over in the spring. Last year’s student writers blew everyone away, so we’re excited to see where this goes.”
