2014 Creative Writing Symposium at Barton College on Monday, April 7

Lee ZachariasWILSON, N.C. – The 18th annual Barton College Creative Writing Symposium, featuring author Lee Zacharias, will be held on Monday, April 7. The symposium will begin at 7:30 p.m. in The Sam and Marjorie Ragan Writing Center. There is no charge for the event, and the public is invited to attend.

Zacharias is the author of two novels, “Lessons” and “At Random,” a collection of short stories, “Helping Muriel Make It Through the Night,” and a collection of personal essays, “The Only Sounds We Make,” scheduled for publication by Hub City Press this spring. Her nonfiction has appeared in such journals as “The Southern Review,” “Shenandoah,” “The Gettysburg Review,” the “North Carolina Literary Review,” and in “The Best American Essays.”

She has won fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the North Carolina Arts Council, and has been recognized with the North Carolina Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Fiction, Theodore Christian Hoepfner Award by “Southern Humanities Review,” and the Glenna Luschei Award by “Prairie Schooner.”  “At Random” was a finalist in literary fiction for the 2013 International Book Awards, the USA Best Book Awards, and the National Indie Excellence Awards.

Emerita Professor of English at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Zacharias has received awards for outstanding teaching from the College of Arts and Science, the University of North Carolina Board of Governors, and the South Atlantic Modern Language Association, and, for a decade, edited “The Greensboro Review.”
