Barton
College Tennis has a storied tradition that has grown over 40 years!
Known as Atlantic Christian College until 1990, the school has dominated
the Southeast Region competition in both the NAIA (through 1992) and
the NCAA Division II (1993-Present). Barton has won two National Championships,
more than two dozen conference titles, and routinely participates in
postseason play!
The Bulldog Tennis Complex, completed in 1998, is a state-of-the-art
facility that features 12 beautiful hard courts, "California"
rebound fencing, indirect halogen lighting on every court, and is located
right on campus! There is elevated, partition bleacher seating for more
than 500 spectatorsit is quite simply one of the premiere collegiate
tennis centers in the country! The school is also upgrading the support
facilities as well, which will give us an academy-style atmosphere where
the whole tennis community is involved.
Barton College competes in the NCAA Division II, with current membership
in the prestigious 10-team Carolina-Virginia Athletics Conference. We
are committed to being a national caliber program while operating within
the letter and the policy of the NCAA and the CVAC. We are a member
of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), competing in the Southern
portion of the East Region. There are more than 20 schools within a
three-hour drive of us, helping us eliminate long trips and missed classes!
Our schedule reflects our drive to be a national contender! Good players
want and need strong opponents, and we play the top ranked schools in
the region and nation. Past schedules have played the maximum number
of contests and tournaments. It is a simple formula--to get to the top
you have to play the best teams
Barton routinely plays 3-5 Division
I schools each season, and we will have a slate of nationally and regionally
ranked DII opponents to go with our tough CVAC matches. Get ready to
play A LOT!
The fall season includes a full 8 weeks of intensive drill and individual
skill work, and it is a time when you can upgrade your game by focusing
on a troublesome shot or develop a weapon. We play 4 individual tournaments,
including the ITA Southeastern Regional, which we host. We also concentrate
on the strength and agility work during this time and carry it over
through the spring. Spring features a schedule of more than 26 duel
matches beginning in late January and continuing through May with the
NCAAs!
There are more than 75 courts in Wilson, which has just under 40,000
people! Hard and Clay, the facilities here showcase tennis in what is
known around the state as a "tennis town". Raleigh-Durham
airport is less than an hour from the campus, and Raleigh itself can
be reached in around 35 minutes. We are only 2 hours from the coast,
with many accessible beaches to chose from. With a year-round tennis
climate, and lighted courts, you can play here virtually everyday of
the year!
