WILSON, N.C. — “Think Pink! Fight Like a Bulldog!” That’s the cheer on Barton’s campus as the Barton College Association of Nursing Students (BCANS) raises awareness and funds for breast cancer research on campus and throughout the Wilson community. BCANS will host the third annual “Think Pink! Fight Like a Bulldog!” event at Barton on Tuesday, Oct. 25, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on center campus.
A variety of activities have been planned to help raise awareness and funds for the event. The Cornhole Tournament will begin at 11 a.m. Teams of two may enter at $5 per team. The two winners of the tournament will receive a “Think Pink, Fight Like a Bulldog” Cornhole Champs 2011 trophy.
There also will be raffles for three themed baskets: “Movie Night” sponsored by BCANS, “Bulldog Spirit” sponsored by Barton, and “Relax at Home” sponsored by Belk of Wilson. There will also be a raffle for a gift card. Raffle tickets will be sold for $1 per ticket or $5 per six tickets.
“Think Pink! Fight Like a Bulldog!” T-shirts will be on sale for $12 each. Pink ribbons and pink paw prints honoring breast cancer survivors and in memory of loved ones also will be available for $1 each. Other activities will include face painting, bead-making jewelry, and a Q&A session with an expert in the field of breast health.
Participants are also invited to celebrate their passion for pink by finding creative pink attire to wear that day. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the “Think Pink! Fight Like a Bulldog!” event will be sent to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The 60-member nursing student organization hopes to raise over $2,000.
“BCANS members are aware of the impact breast cancer has on the families in eastern North Carolina and the United States,” shared Nancy Thompson, BCANS public relations representative and senior nursing major. “The latest statistics associated with the incidence of breast cancer are astounding. According to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, there will be 200,000 women and 2,000 men diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States in 2011.
“As future nursing leaders, BCANS is committed to finding opportunities where we can make a positive difference,” continued Thompson. “‘Think Pink, Fight like a Bulldog’ has proven to be an enthusiastic way to create interest on campus for this significant cause, and we are thrilled to be able to welcome the Wilson community to join in the fun on Tuesday!”
