Gift Officer and Donor Relations Specialist

Barton College is recruiting for a full-time Gift Officer & Donor Relations Specialist reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Leadership Giving. The successful candidate will primarily focus on meeting and working with donors and prospects with significant giving capacity to accomplish their giving goals in the form of annual giving, mid-major ($1,000-$9,999), and major gifts ($10k+) to generate revenue for unrestricted annual fund and specific program proposes that advance the strategic plan of the Barton College.

Barton College is in Wilson, North Carolina, in Eastern North Carolina, which is less than an hour drive to Raleigh and two hours to the beautiful North Carolina beaches. The College is an independent, private college, that has experienced steady growth over the past three years. Total enrollment is approximately 1100 students and growing.

Key responsibilities:

Approximately 80% of the Gift Officer and Donor Relations Specialist’s time will be spent on fundraising tasks, and 20% of their time spent assisting with stewardship and operational functions of the IA team. Core responsibilities include:

  • Build and maintain a portfolio of 150+ constituents, mostly individuals but could also include companies.
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward annual fund and potential major gifts to the College ($1,000-$50,000) from identified suspects and prospects in portfolio.
  • Achieve agreed upon performance metrics including, but not limited to, number of strategic moves, personal visits, and solicitations as well as revenue goals.
  • Develop personalized communications, proposals, reports, and other materials needed to further relationships.
  • Collaborate with internal partners to strategic leverage personalized outreach to compliment mass solicitations and stewardship activities.
  • Learn about campus programs and projects, and effectively communicate the College’s mission to constituents.
  • Maintain integrity of donor database and input donor interactions in Blackbaud CRM database in a timely manner.
  • Work with Asst VP of Leadership Giving and Associate VP of Institutional Advancement to grow and maintain our donor relations activities, including bi-annual impact mailings and quarterly donor reports.
  • Staff lead for annual cultivation and stewardship event for our mid-level and major donors called Prelude to Christmas.
  • Contribute to a culture of collegiality and collaboration with development team members and other members across divisions, providing positive and effective customer service that supports and enhances the work of the Office of Institutional Advancement.
  • Assist as needed in all fundraising programs and activities of Barton College, and perform other duties as assigned by the leadership of Institutional Advancement.

Work Environment:

  • This position operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment. Additionally, it requires travel around the region and to other areas of the country, as well as evening and weekend work hours.

Required Skills, Experience and credentials:

  • A Bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree or CFRE is desired.
  • At least 5 years of fundraising experience, preferably in soliciting and closing lead annual fund gifts as well as major gifts.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build relationships and relate with individuals from various backgrounds, and a wide variety of individuals and companies, including donors, development officers, deans, and faculty.
  • Must have knowledge of Microsoft Office and G-Suite products as well as CRM database systems. Raiser’s Edge and Raiser’s Edge NXT knowledge preferred.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to prioritize assignments effectively.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
