Dr. Susie Mallard Barnes serves as the Director of the Social Work Program, overseeing both the Traditional and Professional Studies BSW options. Dr. Barnes has over 20 years of experience in social work education, program development and evaluation. Prior to teaching, Dr. Barnes worked in homeless services as the director of large shelter and transitional housing program in Raleigh. A Raleigh native, Dr. Barnes earned her BSW from NC State and her MSW from UNC-Chapel Hill. Her PhD in social work is from U-Texas at Austin. Dr. Barnes’ areas of interest and work include housing and food insecurity, restorative Justice, poverty as trauma, race and gender bias, and LGBTQ rights.
