Dr. Shepard comes to Barton College from East Carolina University where she was an associate professor in the Junior Division of the Department of Undergraduate Nursing Science in the College of Nursing from January 2002 to June 2010. Dr. Shepard is a recipient of the North Carolina Board of Governors Distinguished Professor of Nursing award. She is an active member of the Society of Pediatric Nurses and serves on the National Education Committee and is the current president of the National Association of Bariatric Nurses. Dr. Shepard is recognized for her work with children who are overweight and obese. She has published and presented widely on various topics including preschool, school-age, and adolescent obesity; residential weight loss camps; and resources for parents and professionals managing children with weight issues. Dr. Shepard serves on the Advisory Board of the Healthy Children’s Foundation and spends many summer hours as the camp nurse for Camp Shining Stars, a residential weight loss camp hosted at Barton College. Dr. Shepard previously served at Barton College (then Atlantic Christian College) from 1988-1994 and Berea College in Berea, Kentucky, from 1994-2000.
