Today we went to the Poás Volcano in Costa Rica. The volcano is still active, and it is quite a breathtaking view (when the fog doesn’t hide it away). After visiting the volcano, we made our way back to the town of Grecia, our hometown for the trip, and had delicious refrescos at a small cafe called Cafè Delicias.
We explored the town and got a sense of the culture and the “speed” of life. The church, Iglesia de la Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes, is the main attraction in Grecia; and its tall ceilings and the intricate statues and paintings that bring Catholicism to life are a must-see when coming to Grecia.
Oh, by the way have we mentioned the AMAZING food that you can get in the town? The market is full of fresh fruits, meats, and cheese; and the coffee is to die for! Our host families have made sure to feed us authentic Costa Rican cuisine. For breakfast we have tortillas, rice, beans, eggs, and fried cheese with fresh fruit and toast. The day before, we had arroz con pollo, or rice with chicken. We stumbled upon a restaurant here that is what we consider to be their version of Cook Out! The portion sizes are out of this world, but it’s so delicious that you just can’t stop eating!
We are falling in love with this quaint town and the warm people. We can’t wait to see what Day Three has in store for us at the schools!
