WILSON, N.C. — A Painting Workshop by Barton College artist-in-residence J. Chris Wilson will be held in the Case Art Building on Thursday, August 29, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The workshop will focus on successfully creating the illusion of depth in a painting and will have an illustrated presentation with some hands-on activities. This program is part of the Lunch and Lecture Series sponsored by the Barton College Friends of the Visual Arts and one of several artist-in-residence events scheduled for the 2013-2014 Barton College academic year.

The theme of the painting workshop is developing an understanding of how to create the illusion of depth in paintings and other two-dimensional art. The workshop is intended for the painter as well as the collector or connoisseur who wants to understand how this technique is accomplished. Issues of paint surface, linear perspective, and atmospheric perspective will be presented with an emphasis placed on the successful use of atmospheric perspective. Historical examples of atmospheric perspective will be presented and evaluated as case studies. Methods of overcoming the limitations of flat photographs will be discussed for the painters who choose to use photographs and the workshop will be equally invaluable for painters working en plein air.
Wilson is currently working on a 100-painting series of large-scale scenic North Carolina landscapes “From Murphy to Manteo—An Artist’s Scenic Journey.” About 30 of Wilson’s North Carolina scenic landscapes are currently being showcased in The House of Representatives Chamber in the North Carolina Legislative Building, the North Carolina Museum of History, the State Library of North Carolina, and the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources, all in Raleigh. Wilson will have an exhibition of studies, sketches, and drawings from the series at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Science Nature Gallery from September 6-30.
His work has been represented and featured in galleries and museums across the state and in the Southeast, and is included in numerous public, corporate, and private collections in the Southeast, England, Japan, and Saudi Arabia. Wilson was the subject of a feature article in the March issue of “Our State” magazine.
Wilson will be featured in the upcoming season on the UNC-TV “Our Sate” program, “Salt Magazine — The Art and Soul of Wilmington” in August, “Traditional Home” magazine in October, and in a documentary about the East Coast of the United States produced for German and French television later this year.
