Wilson, N.C. — Barton College will welcome historian Gregory S. Taylor, Ph.D., assistant professor of History at Chowan University and the author of “The History of the North Carolina Communist Party,” on Thursday, April 14. The program, titled “You Know What UNC Stands For Don’t You? Organized Communism at the University of North Carolina, 1930-1954,” will be held in The Sam and Marjorie Ragan Writing Center at 7:30 p.m.
Sponsored by the Barton College Heritage Committee and the Department of History and Social Sciences, this event is open to the public free of charge. The community is invited to attend.
Dr. Taylor earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Clemson University in 1992, a Master of Arts degree in Modern European History in 1995 from the University of Alabama, and a Ph.D. in Modern American History from the University of Mississippi in 2005.
In addition to his book, Dr. Taylor has written the book chapter “Organized Labor, Reds, and Radicals of the 1930s” for “Interpreting American History: The New Deal and the Great Depression,” forthcoming from the “Interpreting American History Series” in 2012. In addition, he has published a number of articles, book reviews, and encyclopedia entries.
Dr. Taylor’s current research focuses on the “Biography of Paul Crouch, a CPUSA member turned anti-Communist advocate”, and “1954: The Year the Sixties Began.” A frequent lecturer, he has addressed audiences at the Appalachian Studies Association Conference in Georgia, the Southern Historical Association in Lexington, Ky., and the Historical Society of North Carolina at Elon University, among others.
Among a his honors and recognitions, Dr. Taylor has received the South Carolina State Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Award for Excellence in History, the University of Mississippi Honors Fellowship, and Teacher of the Year at Chowan University.
He is a member of Phi Alpha Theta National History Honor Society, the Organization of American Historians, the American Historical Association, and the Southern Historical Association.
