Elizabeth Kiser is a 2003 graduate of Gardner-Webb University where she studied mass communications and public relations and minored in English with a writing emphasis. From there, she went on to receive her Master of Arts degree in Professional Communication from Clemson University in 2005. After taking two years off to teach at North Carolina State University, Kiser returned to school and received her Ph.D. in Rhetoric, Writing, and Professional Communication from East Carolina University in 2014. Currently, she serves as the Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean for the School of Arts & Humanities, as well as an associate professor of English.
Kiser has varied research interests including online identity creation, rhetoric, and writing studies and pedagogy. She has presented her research at various places including the annual College Composition and Communication Conference, the Carolina Rhetoric Conference, and the Computers and Writing Conference. Her dissertation research focused on the intersection of high school AP English and first-year writing in college. She hopes her research will be used to better inform both high school and college instructors about the issues related to the transfer (or lack of transfer) of writing skills and knowledge.
She is the proud mom of Gavin, her son, and Gunner, the family dog. When she isn’t at Barton, Kiser enjoys coaching (and doing) Crossfit, baking, paddle boarding, and spending time with her family.
