Director of the Center for Vocation and Rural Ministry

Barton College seeks a founding director for the newly created Center for Vocation and Rural Ministry. The director leads a project with the goal of supporting ministers in small, rural, and diverse congregations in Eastern North Carolina. This position is funded by a five-year grant provided by Lilly Endowment, Inc., and reports directly to the Director of the Center for Religious Studies. The Director will also work closely with Barton College students, the Chaplain, the Assistant Provost for Integrative Learning, and other staff and faculty involved in this new initiative.

Essential Functions

  • Develop relationships with local and regional pastors (and their congregations) of various denominations.
  • Provide marketing and advancement initiatives for the CVRM.
  • Provide summer renewal experience for pastors.
  • Provide spiritual direction.
  • Partner with Barton’s internal Center for Religious Studies and Oral Communication Center to provide support for pastors and to support religious-affiliated activities of the College.
  • Manage data and assessment goals for the Center’s work and programs.
  • Support the Barton Chapel Scholars Cohorts.
  • Plan programs.
  • Manage events.
  • Advance the College’s commitment to support the Disciples of Christ and to foster ecumenism.
  • Engage students in the work of the CVRM and partner with the Barton College Chaplain.
  • Support the Barton Chapel Scholars.
  • Travel and work weekends as needed.
  • Other as needed or assigned.

Desired Education, Skills, and Experience

  • A master of divinity degree (M. Div.).
  • Substantial experience serving in the church environment with proven ability to relate effectively with ministers to support their well-being.
  • Demonstrated understanding of small, rural, diverse congregations.
  • Ability to plan and manage programs and achieve project outcomes.
  • Proficiency in using Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to effectively interact and communicate with diverse populations.
  • Ability to discretely and appropriately handle confidential and proprietary information.
  • Proven track record of reliability, responsibility, and integrity.
  • Successful management of grants and/or the budget of a non-profit organization.
