WILSON, N.C. — Barton College’s professor emeritus and artist-in-residence J. Chris Wilson will hold group and private critiques of paintings on Thursday and Friday, September 19 and 20, in the Barton Art Galleries. On September 19, there will be a group critique from 4-6 p.m., and each participant may bring one painting for the group to discuss. On September 20, there will be one-on-one 30-minute sessions by appointment from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Enrollment is limited for the Friday sessions; those interested should inquire early about reserving appointments by contacting Bonnie LoSchiavo in the Art Department at 252-399-6477 or email artgalleries@barton.edu. Each participant may bring up to four paintings for the private session with Wilson. There is no charge for participating in the group or private critiques.
The critiques will focus on issues of composition and design, color concepts, painting technique, spatial relationships, and specific ways to develop paintings to a higher level.
Wilson has almost 60 paintings and drawings currently on exhibition in five significant state buildings in the Capital District in Raleigh. He has an exhibition on view in the North Carolina Museum of Natural Science Nature Gallery until September 29 of the studies, sketches, and drawings from his major series of large-scale scenic North Carolina landscapes “From Murphy to Manteo—An Artist’s Scenic Journey,” which are on exhibit at the Museum of History, the State Library of North Carolina, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and the House Chamber of the North Carolina Legislative Building through December 2014 or longer.
Wilson’s work was the subject of a feature article in the March issue of “Our State” magazine. Wilson’s historic home and art were featured in the August issue of “Salt Magazine,” and a few of his paintings will be included in an article in the October issue of “Traditional Home” magazine. The artist will be featured in the coming season on UNC-TV’s “Our State” program scheduled to air on January 2, 2014, and in a documentary focusing on the East Coast of the United States produced for German and French television. In the recent past, Wilson was featured on WRAL’s “Tarheel Traveler,” and “WTVD’s Heart of Carolina Perspectives.” His work has been shown in galleries and museums throughout the Southeast, and his art is also represented in numerous public and private collections in the United States, especially in the Southeast, and in England, Japan, and Saudi Arabia.
Wilson has been involved in symposia, community presentations, and publications on art, decorative arts, and historic preservation, and he has engaged in extensive community service throughout his professional career, currently serving on the boards of Preservation North Carolina, The Arts Council of Wilmington and New Hanover County, and the Blount Bridgers House/Hobson Pittman Memorial Foundation.
Originally from Waycross and St. Simons Island, Ga., Wilson earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Georgia, where he also completed post-graduate work, with Lamar Dodd as his major professor. Wilson served on the faculty of Barton College from 1974-2012, earning professor emeritus recognition following retirement. Now, he continues at Barton as the College’s first artist-in-residence.
Wilson makes his home in Wilmington with his wife, Kathleen, and has two adult children: a son, Matthew, and a daughter, Singleton.
