WILSON, N.C. — Barton College will welcome novelist, poet, playwright, and essayist Linda Beatrice Brown for the upcoming Victor R. Small Writers Series’ Fall Lecture scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 23, at 7:30 p.m. The lecture will be held in The Sam and Marjorie Ragan Writing Center on campus. This event is open to the public at no charge, and the community is invited to attend.
Dr. Brown has published three novels: “Rainbow ’Roun Mah Shoulder,” “Crossing Over Jordan,” and “Black Angels,” a Chicago Public Library Best of the Best Books selection for 2009. “Black Angels,” her first book for young readers, tells the story of three orphans finding a way to survive during the American Civil War. It takes us, in the words of poet Nikki Giovanni, “on a marvelous journey to America’s best self when we struggled to free the future of hate and fear.”
Her book of poetry is titled “A Love Song to Black Men,” and she also published “The Long Walk: A History of the Presidency of Willa B. Player at Bennett College.” Dr. Brown’s work has appeared in “O’Henry Festival Stories,” “Black Scholar,” “Religion and Intellectual Life,” “Ebony Junior,” and the children’s magazine “Cricket.”
Among her three plays brought to the stage is “Congo’s River Song,” produced by the North Carolina Museum of Art in 2001. Dr. Brown is the Willa B. Player Distinguished Professor of the Humanities at Bennett College for Women in Greensboro, North Carolina, where she teaches African American Literature.
