Barton Students Provide Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

Wilson, N.C. — Accounting students in the School of Business at Barton College will be spending some evenings in the near future to provide income tax assistance and Federal and State tax return preparation for members of the Wilson area community. This tax assistance program will be held on Tuesdays, Feb. 22, March 1, March 8, and March 22 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. each evening.  These tax preparation and e-file services are FREE OF CHARGE.

Taxpayers may come to any of these work sessions; taxes will be prepared on a first-come-first-served basis. The location for check-in for each of the three sessions will be the Hines Hall lobby on the Barton College campus.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program will provide FREE tax help with BASIC RETURNS, particularly to low-income taxpayers, individuals with disabilities, and elderly taxpayers, as well as students. VITA is authorized to prepare the following forms: 1040EZ; 1040A with Schedules 1 (Interest and Dividends), 2 (Child Care Expenses), 3 (Credit for the Elderly and Disabled) and Earned Income Credit; 1040 with Schedules A (Itemized deductions), B (Interest and Dividends), C-EZ (Business Income), M (Making Work Pay Credit), Earned Income Credit, 2441 (Child and Dependent Care Credit), 8812 (Additional Child Tax Credit, 8863 (Educational Credits), and retirement income reporting. State tax returns are also automatically prepared in this process.

This year, it is VERY IMPORTANT that each taxpayer bring to the VITA Site his/her social security card, a picture ID, and the social security card of anyone who will be claimed on the taxpayer’s return as a dependent, as well as all documents such as W-2s, 1099s, and 1098-Ts, if applicable.  If social security cards are not available to the taxpayer, he/she must obtain a letter from the Social Security Administration Office stating the correct social security number(s) for the individual(s).  It is also a good idea to bring last year’s tax return, if it is available.

For additional information, interested taxpayers may call the Barton College School of Business at 252-399-6418 or 252-399-6426 (Mrs. Burrus).
