WILSON, N.C. — Barton College was well represented at the 58th Annual North Carolina Phi Beta Lambda State Leadership Conference held during spring semester in Charlotte. Sixteen Barton chapter members participated in a variety of competitive events and attended general sessions, regional meetings, and leadership seminars. Approximately 300 delegates, representing 25 chapters, attended the annual conference. First-place, second-place, and third-place winners at the state conference earned the right to compete at the National Leadership Conference to be held in San Antonio, TX, in June.
Sarah Casey, a sophomore from Kinston, was elected the 2012-2013 Eastern Region Vice President.
The team of Tara Myers Strother, a senior from Smithfield and George Black, a December graduate from Winterville, earned first-place honors in Business Decision Making. Black also garnered first place in Management Concepts. Ryan Canoy, a freshman from Shelby, placed first in Contemporary Sports Issues. Ashley Johnson, a freshman from Wilson, placed first in Computer Applications. Cameron Jones, a senior from Selma, placed first in Justice Administration. Kathy Turner, a senior from Wilson, earned first-place honors with her Community Service Project-Dating Abuse.
Canoy placed second in Sports Management & Marketing. Holly Lafond, a sophomore from New Bern, placed second in Accounting Principles. Jordan Lee, a sophomore from Wilson, placed second in both Marketing Concepts and Word Processing. Christina Powers, a junior from Wilson, placed second in Future Business Executive. Tara Strother placed second in Business Communications. Jonathan Strother, a senior from Henderson, placed second in Information Management. Casey and Jones teamed for second in Business Presentation. Powers and Jones earned second-place honors with their Community Service Project-Food Bank. The chapter’s Local Annual Business Report, authored by Michole Brown, a senior from Wilson, received second place.
Brown placed third in Public Speaking. Casey Gaston, a freshman from Wilson, earned third-place honors in both Accounting Principles and Microeconomics.
Earning fourth place were Turner in International Business and Casey in Microeconomics. Earning fifth place were Brown in Retail Management and Zachary Faircloth, a junior from Autryville, in Sports Management & Marketing. Faircloth also placed sixth in Contemporary Sports Issues.
Earning seventh place were Demetrius McCray, a freshman from Wilson, in Sales Presentation, Powers in Client Service, Lafond in Public Speaking. Eighth place went to Turner in Client Service and Johnson in Computer Concepts.
Brown, Turner, Tara Strother, and Black also received “Who’s Who in North Carolina Phi Beta Lambda” recognition for their outstanding contributions to North Carolina Phi Beta Lambda. Black garnered the most points in the competition and will represent North Carolina at National Leadership Conference.
In addition to receiving the Gold Seal Award, Gold Star Chapter, Membership Madness recognition, and the Terry Lowrance Leadership Award, the Gamma Gamma Chapter of Barton College received recognition for its monetary contributions to state- and nationally-recommended projects. Teresa Parker, chapter adviser, was honored with recognition of 35 years as FBLA-PBL adviser.
