WILSON, N.C. — The Barton College/Wilson Symphony will present their annual Fall Concert Sunday, Nov. 24, at 3 p.m. in the Lauren Kennedy and Alan Campbell Theatre on the Barton campus. The orchestra, conducted by music director Mark N. Peterson, will feature the gifted violin prodigy Brian Lin in a performance of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor. Also featured on the program will be Beethoven’s youthful and innovative Symphony No. 1.
“Brian Lin has really captured our hearts and imagination,” said Peterson. “He has impressed the orchestra with his amazing technique and his sensitive and nuanced playing. The rehearsals have gone amazingly well, and we just have to be sure to keep up with his spirited tempi. The Mendelssohn Violin Concerto has a history of association with child prodigies and Mr. Lin’s performance will introduce his abundant talent to the Wilson audience.”
Lin began studying violin at the age of six with Chris Gawlik in Greenville, and he immediately exhibited his technical and musical abilities. Now, at the age of 11, Lin has performed in several recitals, public performances, and he was a finalist in the Junior Division of the North Carolina Concerto Competition. He was recently invited to perform in the Piccolo Spoleto festival concert series, The Rising Star, in Charleston, S.C.
He has been a member of the Eastern Youth Orchestra at the East Carolina University since 2011 and has been accepted to NCMEA’s Junior Eastern Region Honors Orchestra. Lin attended the Charleston International Music School in 2012 and participated in a master class with Yuriy Bekker, concertmaster of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra in 2011. Also an accomplished mathematician, Lin received a perfect score in the American Mathematics Contest 8 (AMC8) in 2012 and received first place in the geometry segment of the East Carolina University Math Competition in 2013.
Admission for the fall orchestra performance will be $10 at the door or by season ticket.
