WILSON, N.C. — Barton College is pleased to announce the appointment of Gary Daynes, Ph.D., of Pleasant Grove, Utah, as provost and vice president for academic affairs. He also holds academic rank as professor of history. His appointment was effective July 22.
“I am most pleased to welcome Dr. Gary Daynes to the Barton campus,” said Dr. Norval C. Kneten, president of Barton College. “His extensive record of successfully addressing challenges in independent higher education and his strong reputation for developing and encouraging a culture of creativity and productivity for faculty sets a perfect tone for reenergizing current academic programs and for moving our new program initiatives forward. His extensive experience in higher education administration will provide a strong foundation for leadership as a valued team member of our College’s Senior Staff.”
Dr. Daynes comes to Barton from Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he served as associate provost for integrative learning and vice president of strategic outreach and enrollment. He earned a Ph.D. and Master of Arts degree in American History from the University of Delaware. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Brigham Young University. His academic work focuses on the history of efforts to build and strengthen community.
“As chief academic officer, Dr. Daynes oversees the administration of the academic programs of the College, and works closely with department chairs and the deans of the academic schools as well as the director of the library, the dean of accelerated professional programs, the director of academic success, and the registrar,” Dr. Kneten explained.
“I am honored to become part of the Barton community,” shared Dr. Daynes. “There are thousands of colleges and universities in the United States. Very few of them can match Barton’s combination of qualities. Barton’s students come from a wide range of backgrounds. That commitment is evident in the critical thinking and communication skills of Barton graduates, and the success of those graduates in their career, family, and community lives.

A native of Salt Lake City, Utah, Dr. Daynes is the son of Kathy and Bill Daynes of Littleton, Colo. He is married to the former Kristine Schneider of Salt Lake City, Utah, and they have four daughters: Amelia, Lucy, Maggie, and Olivia.
Among his civic and professional memberships is the College Access Network of Utah. He also served as Board Chair at City Academy and as the Board Chair of the Utah Humanities Council.
