Assistant Professor of Theatre

Barton College has an opening for one full-time or two part-time Assistant Professor(s) to teach theatre curriculum within the School of Visual, Performing, and Communication Arts, beginning in August 2019 for a one-year appointment. Other responsibilities may include directing/producing one to two main-stage productions during the academic year, teaching appropriate general education courses, developing discipline-specific and interdisciplinary curriculum, advising students, maintaining a program of scholarly activities, and participating in departmental, college, and professional service.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Teaching college courses for undergraduate students
  • Teaching multiple subjects within prescribed curriculum
  • Preparing and delivering lectures to students
  • Compiling bibliographies of specialized materials for outside reading assignments
  • Stimulating class discussions
  • Compiling, administering, and grading examinations or assigning this work to others
  • Conducting research or actively participating in performing arts programming, sharing the findings and experience in discussion forums, or by publishing in professional journals
  • Performing related duties such as advising students on academic and vocational curricula and acting as advisor to student organizations
  • Serving on faculty committees
  • Developing curriculum, in collaboration with the dean, for new programs
  • Overseeing curricular revisions and faculty development
  • Other duties as needed or assigned

The specific work schedule may vary from week to week based upon student and production needs. Schedule will require coordinating with theatre production team and working some nights and weekends.

Desired Education, Skills, and Experience

Minimum Qualifications

  • Terminal degree (M.F.A., Ph.D.) in Theatre with emphasis in acting, directing, musical theatre, or related theatre degree/emphasis
  • Significant theatre performance, directing, and production experience
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
  • Ability to teach departmental curriculum within the area of theatre
  • Ability to teach general education courses as needed, such as First-Year Seminar and/or Theatre Appreciation
  • Ability to advise students as needed
  • Maintain a program of professional and scholarly activities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required with ability to effectively interact and communicate at all levels within and outside the organization
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to effectively operate in a fast-paced environment and to work independent of direct supervision
  • Strong, detail-oriented organizational and planning skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Teaching experience at the college level
  • Experience managing budgets
  • Experience supervising staff
  • Experience with operation of a theatre facility
  • Success in collaborating with community organizations
