Art Installation by Barton’s Susan Fecho on Display at SPC Mechanical

WILSON, N.C. – March 18, 2015 — No stranger to unique artistic materials, Susan Fecho has added HVAC and plumbing supplies to her long list of media utilized in the creative process. The Department of Art and Design chair at Barton College recently completed an exhibit commissioned by SPC Mechanical in Wilson.

Established in 1965 as Southern Piping Company by Buren Williford, who now serves as chairman of the board, the family enterprise has grown in size and stature to become one of the leading mechanical contractors in North Carolina. As part of celebrations marking 50 years in business, Southern Piping updated its name to SPC Mechanical in 2015. President Chris Williford wanted to honor his father and commemorate the special occasion with a display highlighting the company’s rich history and many achievements. The younger Williford also serves on the Board of Trustees at Barton College, and has known Fecho for many years.

“We really wanted to incorporate a lot of the tools and equipment we use in our industry,” he explained. “So, I collected a variety of items – a wrench, a torch, copper piping, even a hard hat – that reflect our work. I was excited to see how Susan would incorporate them into her design.”

Last May, Williford provided Fecho with a hodgepodge of materials and a general idea. They collaborated on ways to arrange and fasten the items, and constructed a theme for the gear, family photos, and other memorabilia.

“Their consistent input added clarity of vision into their company,” Fecho said. “We focused on SPC Mechanical’s dedication to growth, safety, and contributions to the Wilson community beyond just the ‘job.’ I hope the display achieves the goal of showcasing SPC’s journey from a small independent startup, to an important corporation that has not lost sight of community and family.”

Williford says without a doubt, that goal was achieved.

“This display is about our family and our history here at SPC,” he said. “And, I think she captured that all perfectly.”

The elaborate project reflects Fecho’s multifaceted talents, as well as the comprehensive services provided by SPC Mechanical. For more information, contact the company at (252) 291-1561, or visit its Wilson offices at 1908 Baldree Road.
