WILSON, N.C. — April 17, 2025 — Barton College is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2024-2025 Celebration of Distinguished Alumni Awards, which honor alumni who have achieved personal and professional success while demonstrating exemplary service to both Barton College and their communities. This year’s honorees will be celebrated on Saturday, April 26 at 6:00 p.m. in the Bridgestone Americas Atrium at Kennedy Family Theatre.
Among the 2024-2025 alumni honorees will be Mr. David Hicks (Class of 1984), Distinguished Alumni Award recipient (posthumously); Ms. Naija Speight (Class of 2019), Outstanding Recent Graduate Award recipient; Dr. Jackie Ennis (Class of 1980), Alumni Service Award recipient; and Mrs. Jessica Tyson, Gary W. Hall Employee Service Award recipient.
About the Alumni honorees —
David Hicks, a proud 1984 graduate of Barton College, left an enduring legacy through his business acumen and commitment to his alma mater. A first-generation college student from Spring Hope, David earned his degree in Business Administration while being an active member of the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity. He went on to found North State Acceptance, a successful auto finance business, and expanded into real estate with properties across several North Carolina counties. A generous philanthropist, David made transformative contributions to Barton College, including matching the largest alumni gift to establish the David S. Hicks Family Sports Operations Center. His commitment to the College was further demonstrated when he joined the Board of Trustees in 2024. David, who cherished his family and farm, left a lasting impact on Barton College and its students.
Naija Speight, a 2019 graduate of Barton College, exemplifies the spirit of service and leadership that the institution strives to cultivate. Since earning her degree, Naija has remained an integral part of the Barton community, currently working in Hackney Library and teaching her first course. Her dedication to student success is evident through her mentorship, academic assistance, and faculty collaboration. Naija has also contributed to campus-wide projects and speaking engagements, enhancing student experiences. Her ongoing commitment to creating a supportive learning environment makes her a well-deserving recipient of the Outstanding Recent Graduate Award.
Dr. Jackie Ennis, a 1980 graduate of Barton College, has dedicated her career to education and the advancement of the institution. Currently serving as the Dean of the School of Education and the Dean of Accelerated Professional Programs, Dr. Ennis brought over 15 years of teaching experience to Barton College in 1995. Her work in teacher preparation, adult education, and instructional technology has had a significant impact on the College and beyond. Dr. Ennis is a co-author of the textbook “Promoting 21st Century Skills and Thinking with Classroom Technology” and has led professional development for educators across North Carolina. Her commitment to improving K-12 education and her involvement in statewide initiatives reflect her exceptional service and leadership.
Jessica Tyson has been a dedicated member of the Barton College community for nearly 18 years, making a lasting impact across Admissions, Facility Services, and Institutional Advancement. In her current role as Director of Advancement Services, she has strengthened departmental collaboration and streamlined processes to enhance institutional support. Beyond her technical expertise, Jessica is known for her warmth, generosity, and unwavering commitment to those around her. Colleagues and students alike appreciate her willingness to lend a helping hand, her thoughtful approach to problem-solving, and the genuine care she brings to every interaction. Her dedication to excellence and service is reflected in her recognition as the recipient of the Gary W. Hall Employee Service Award, a testament to both her professional impact and the profound way she enriches the Barton College family.
