Overview
The mathematics major at Barton offers a well-balanced program designed to give you the foundation you need to pursue a career in the private or public sector. Our mathematics program provides each student with a foundation that allows them to reason mathematically and work collaboratively to solve problems. You’ll not only master the traditional core of calculus, discrete mathematics, linear algebra, statistics and geometry; you’ll also study advanced theoretical and applied mathematics. This blend of both theoretical basics and practical applications, complemented with your ability to reason and work collaboratively, means you’ll have the knowledge base and essential skills necessary for the 21st century career path you choose.

Course Information
We encourage you to double major or pursue a minor. Mathematics majors have double majored and/or minored in Accounting, Biology, Chemistry, Business Administration, Physical Education, Religion, English, Theatre, and Elementary and Middle School Education. It is a major that fits well with nearly any other interest you may have.
Your first math course at Barton College is determined by your score on the Math Readiness Test(s) (MRT 1 and 2).
Required math courses for both the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees are:

Additional Requirements:
- If you pursue the B.A., you must complete one year of an intermediate foreign language.
- If you pursue the B.S., you must complete three semesters of lab science courses.
Scholarships and Financial Aid
The John Walston Dunn Mathematics Scholarship is awarded annually to a junior or senior mathematics major. Selection criteria include a minimum 3.0 GPA, an enthusiasm for learning, and a willingness and patience to assist others in learning mathematics.
The Ruth O’Neal Scholarship is awarded to mathematics majors in a variety of classes who meet the minimum 3.0 GPA criteria, participate in departmental activities, and demonstrate the potential for excellence.
Career Opportunities
Studying mathematics develops such skills as arguing logically and rigorously, thinking abstractly, formulating and solving problems, analyzing data, and creating and analyzing mathematical models. These are skills employers greatly value. Consequently, math majors find themselves in demand by employers for careers in a wide spectrum of fields. Our students often make use of the opportunity to major or minor in a second area so they know the field they are most interested in applying their mathematical knowledge.
