Overview
A major in chemistry from Barton doesn’t just provide you with a solid understanding of chemical principles. It also develops your critical and analytical thinking skills, and enhances your ability to communicate what you’ve observed. You’ll also gain extensive hands-on learning both in the lab and through internships designed to give you practical experiences in a variety of settings.
Special Features
Our highly developed internship program includes a pre-internship class that assists you in completing your resume and locating an appropriate placement. Once the internship is completed, you’ll provide a multi-media presentation describing your internship experience to other students and faculty.
The breadth of course offerings allows you to take classes in many aspects of chemistry and explore your interests.
We offer a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry.

Along with their internships, our students assist and shadow veterinarians, medical doctors, physician assistants, physical therapists, dentists, chiropractors, and podiatrists.
Career Opportunities
With a degree in chemistry from Barton, you can easily enter graduate or professional school. Students have earned master’s degrees and PhD’s from such institutions as East Carolina University, University of South Carolina, and The Ohio State University.
And because you’ll be comfortable working with data and evaluating experimental evidence, and familiar with many different kinds of laboratory techniques and instrumentation, you’re also qualified to work with analytical testing laboratories or the pharmaceutical industry.
Clubs and Organizations
The Barton College Science Club is open to anyone interested in science. The organization participates in community events and sponsors speakers for professional talks on campus.
