Friends of Hackney Library

The Friends of Hackney Library began in the early 1990s and soon afterward sponsored an Author Dinner and Lecture Series, which has become an established and much anticipated tradition within the Barton and Wilson communities. This historic organization provides the community with an opportunity to meet and interact with current authors. Over the years, the Friends organization has contributed financially to the Library and made it possible to purchase equipment and materials to help the Library grow in its mission.

Membership in Friends of Hackney Library, enables you to:

  • Borrow from the College and through interlibrary loans, and enjoy extended computer access
  • Support the Library in developing its collection and other special projects
  • Participate with a group of book-minded people in special programs

Friends of Visual Arts

In 2006, a group of art enthusiasts gathered to plan and implement an organization dedicated to the visual arts at Barton College. Shortly thereafter, the Friends of Visual Arts emerged.

The mission of the Friends of Visual Arts is to enrich the cultural life of Barton College and the surrounding community through the presentation of quality regional, national, and international artists, and captivating arts education programs. In addition, the purposes of this organization are:

  • To present at least one or more annual lectures related to the visual arts for the Friends and for the greater community
  • To stimulate interest by the greater community in the visual arts by providing visual arts enrichment activities
  • To actively engage the College and the greater community in developing resources to meet the needs of the Department of Art, specifically for visual arts at Barton College.

Membership in Friends of Visual Arts provides these benefits:

  • Attend members-only gallery openings and special events
  • Meet regional, national, and international artists
  • Participate with other art enthusiasts in special educational programs including lectures and classes

Barton College/Wilson Symphony Orchestra

In 1964, a group of musicians formed a small string ensemble. Today, this group is more than 50 members strong and is known as the Barton College/Wilson Symphony Orchestra. The Symphony is a teaching orchestra that includes musicians from Barton College and the Wilson community.

Its board of directors supplements support of the orchestra through fundraising efforts that enable the orchestra to hire professional musicians who perform during concerts and serve as mentors for student musicians. The orchestra provides an extraordinary opportunity for members of the College and Wilson communities to join their musical gifts and talents for the study and performance of symphonic music.

The Barton College/Wilson Symphony Orchestra offers the public four performances each year, including two signature dinner performances: Symphony and Soul and Love the Symphony. The orchestra draws its strength from the cooperative effort of Barton and the Wilson community. Music, at this distinctive level, enhances our cultural lives. However, quality is expensive. The Symphony Orchestrs funds a part of its operating expenses with annual memberships.

Membership benefits include:

  • Complimentary season tickets for the fall and spring concerts
  • Recognition in concert programs
  • Priority reservation opportunities for the two annual signature dinner events: Symphony and Soul and Love the Symphony
