Layer It On!: Techniques and Ideas for Building Rich, Expressive Journal Pages

We will cover techniques including different painting techniques, adding collage, journaling, wax resist, stencils, stamping and embellishing, cutting doors/ windows, adding tags, and folding pages.
We will see many examples of visual journals and altered books using these techniques and find inspiration for your pages in a variety of journaling prompts. Handouts, including 100 journal prompts, are included. Start expressing yourself today and let the creativity begin!

Traditional Japanese Binding Techniques, instructor Gerard Lange

This workshop covers several traditional Japanese bookbinding techniques of various sewn constructions. Typically these book forms do not require the use of adhesive and the methods can be adapted to encompass non-traditional materials.

Fan and Pop, instructor Susan Fecho

This workshop covers the design and building basics for book pages that fan, flag and pop. Pop-up structures provide means to delight the viewer, purposefully interrupt the narrative such as flapping flag book structures that allow the artist/writer to fragment and contrast the visuals.  The class will discuss different spine and page dimensions and provide hands-on instruction to making prototypes for later adaptation.
