PELL GRANT POLICY AND PROCEDURE
Policy
Beginning with the 2009-2010 academic year, students are eligible for up to two (2) scheduled Pell Grant awards per year. For the summer of 2010, Barton College will pay a Pell Grant out of the 2009-2010 year during the transition period for the new Pell Grant awards. If students use their first scheduled award and enroll in a minimum of six (6) credit hours, they can be eligible for a second scheduled award. For the summer of 2010 only, students' 2010-2011 eligibility during the transition payment period and their academic progression requirements will not be taken into consideration. In 2011, Barton College will consider the summer term to be a crossover payment period. The College will pay a Pell Grant out of the 2010-2011 or 2011-2012 academic year, depending on which award year provides the most Pell Grant eligibility. Students must have valid ISIRs on file for the year that is used to determine Pell Grant eligibility. If students use their first scheduled awards and enroll in a minimum of six (6) credit hours, they can be eligible for a second scheduled award. Students must have one (1) hour, which would go into their second year.
For example, Barton College defines its year as 24 credit hours. If a student receives a fulltime award in fall 2010 and spring 2011 and enrolls in six (6) hours or more for the summer, he would receive a Pell Grant for the summer payment period from either the 2010-2011 or the 2011-2012 award year, depending on which year will provide the largest scheduled award and providing he is otherwise eligible.
Pell Grants for a payment period may be combined using the first and second scheduled awards if the student is eligible. For summer 2011, students must meet applicable academic progression requirements for 2010-2011 awards, or they may be eligible for a first scheduled award from the 2011-2012 year. For the summer terms in all years after 2011, the rules applied in summer 2011 will be applied using the correct aid years as determined by federal regulations.
Transfer students are eligible for two (2) scheduled Pell awards beginning 2010-2011. Barton College will use the assumption method to determine acceleration toward the second scheduled Pell award.
If a student received 100 percent of the first scheduled Pell award at another institution, Barton College will assume the student completed the first academic year. However, if the student received less than 100 percent, Barton College will use a ratio based on Barton's academic year as the percentage of the scheduled award that was received from the other school(s) and round down.
Procedure
The Barton College Office of Financial Aid will automatically determine your eligibility for the Pell Grant for the summer term. Please note that a summer Pell Grant will not be awarded automatically if a student with Pell Grant eligibility is on probation for not meeting the requirements of the satisfactory academic progress policy or if the student is close to exceeding the maximum timeframe for earning a degree. Students in either situation need to contact the Financial Aid office once grades are posted for the spring semester to determine if their eligibility will extend to the summer.
