Melissa Long is an assistant professor in the Department of Physical Education, Sport Studies, and Gerontology and is an Approved Clinical Instructor in the Athletic Training Education Program. She is the Coordinator of Fitness Management and the Strength and Conditioning Specialist for the College. In addition, she serves as an athletic trainer in the Department of Athletics, working primarily with the men’s and women’s volleyball teams.
Long earned a Bachelor of Science degree in athletic training at Mount Union College where she minored in exercise science and chemistry. She then went on to earn her Master of Science degree in human and consumer sciences in nutrition science, with a concentration in sport and fitness nutrition, from Ohio University.
Long came to Barton College from Ohio University in 2009, where she was a graduate assistant within the university’s Diabetes Research Initiative (DRI), served as an off-campus affiliated athletic trainer, and pursued her Master’s degree. With the DRI, she created and implemented a youth obesity intervention program. Simultaneously, Long served as an athletic trainer for nearby Federal Hocking High School. She is a Red Cross Certified Lifeguard and has worked as a waterfront lifeguard and personal trainer at the Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, N.Y.
