Elizabeth Dennis is a 2003 graduate of Gardner-Webb University where she studied mass communications and public relations and minored in English with a writing emphasis. From there, she went on to receive her Master of Arts degree in Professional Communication from Clemson University in 2005. After taking two years off to teach at North Carolina State University, Dennis returned to school to begin work on her Ph.D. in Professional and Technical Discourse from East Carolina University. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of English and Modern Languages and the Director of the First-Year Seminar Program.
Dennis has varied research interests including online identity creation, rhetoric, and writing studies and pedagogy. She has presented her research at various places including annual the College Composition and Communication Conference, the Carolina Rhetoric Conference, and the Computers and Writing Conference. Her dissertation research focuses on the intersection of high school AP English and first-year writing in college. She hopes her research will be used to better inform both high school and college instructors about the issues related to the transfer (or lack of transfer) of writing skills and knowledge.
She is married to her college sweetheart, Kerry Dennis; and they have one child, Gavin, and a dog, Maggie. When she isn’t grading or writing papers, Mrs. Dennis enjoys running, cooking, and spending time with her family.
