Who must live on campus?
All students who are considered a freshman or sophomore by Barton College standards must live on campus. The exception is if the student is commuting from home (50 mile radius of Barton's campus).
How do I apply to live on campus?
To apply for a space in a residence hall, new students will receive a Housing Application once Barton College has received your deposit. Please complete and return the application to us. We encourage students to apply early for on-campus housing. The earlier you apply, the higher priority you will have to be assigned to your living preferences.
Do I have a residence hall contract?
Your residence hall contract is the application we send you. It is your commitment form to live on campus for the entire academic year or for the remainder of the year if you arrive midway through. The contract includes room and meals. There is a section on the contract that allows you to choose lifestyle options and select your meal plan.
How much does it cost to live in the residence halls?
Room and board rates at Barton are very competitive. We think you'll find the conveniences of living near classes and friends, as well as a meal plan that meets your needs at an affordable price.
Is a housing deposit required?
There is no housing deposit required.
When will I get my residence hall contract?
Your Housing Application serves as your contract. All contracts sent to new students will be for double-room accommodations. Contracts/Applications are mailed to students who have paid the admissions deposit. Continuing Barton College students complete their Housing Contract/Application during the spring semester.
Is my housing payment refundable?
Should a student withdraw from Barton College, then a prorated refund may be granted. For questions concerning refunding and payment please contact the Business Office at 252-399-6333.
When will I know where I will live?
The Office of Residence Life will mail your housing assignment, telephone number and roommate information once we have received your Application and have processed it.
How are housing assignments made?
Housing accommodations are assigned according to the date you deposited with the Admissions Office of Barton College and by the date the Office of Residence Life received your Housing Application. Assignments are based on the options you request, information you provide, and on space availability. Keep in mind that we can only use the information you provide us, so it would be a good idea to fill out the Application yourself, paying close attention to what you are requesting.
May I request a particular residence hall?
You will be asked to rank the Residence Halls in order of your preference. Our staff carefully reviews each request you make and then selects the hall that best fits your needs. Space in Residence Halls often fills up quickly and we may need to look at your next request. Don't forget that the next academic year you are welcome to choose the hall or even the room you would like to live in during the following year.
How do I get a roommate and when will I learn their name?
An information card will be mailed to you once your application has been processed and you have been placed with your roommate. Due to the increased number of students returning to the residence halls and the anticipated size of the freshman class, roommate requests and roommate changes postmarked after June 15 are not likely to be honored. We apologize for any inconvenience our space limitations may cause you.
What if I don't like my roommate?
Most of the time, roommates become good friends and get along well. However, there are a few instances when roommates aren't compatible. But don't worry - we want you to be happy in the residence halls. If for some reason you have problems with your roommate, our staff will help you work though the differences.

Please follow this link to learn more about each Residence Hall.
Do I need to bring a telephone?
Yes, either you or your roommate will need to bring a telephone. One active, modular telephone jack is provided in each room. You also may request voice mail service through Information Technology.
How do I make long-distance calls from my room?
With the prevalence of cell phones and calling cards, Barton no longer offers long-distance service in the residence halls. If believe you will need to make long-distances calls while at Barton, we recommend that you use your cell phone, a calling card, or a collect call.
Who is in charge?
A full-time, live-in Area Director is responsible for two halls. The Area Directors supervise Resident Assistants (R.A.), who live on each floor.
How is safety and security on campus?
With safety concerns in mind, we installed card readers at the entrances to all our halls so only residents of each building can access the doors. In addition, all of the halls have an escort policy. All guests need to be escorted by a resident at all times. Members of the housing staff are on duty for students to contact should the need arise. East Campus Suites as well as Hilley, Waters, and Wenger Halls contain cameras that are monitored at the Police Department. Barton College contracts the Wilson Police Department for our campus safety needs. We are enjoying a close relationship as the Wilson Police Department has set-up a District Office on Barton College's Campus. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, there are Wilson Police Officers on campus.
