Dr. Rebecca Garland to Speak at Master of Education Commencement Exercises

Exercises Scheduled for Friday, August 10, at 7 p.m.

WILSON, N.C. — Rebecca Garland, Ph.D., chief academic officer for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, will be the featured speaker at the second annual Master of Education Commencement Exercises of Barton College scheduled for Friday evening, Aug. 10, at 7 p.m. in Hardy Alumni Hall.

Dr. Norval C. Kneten will preside over the commencement program as president of Barton College. Dr. John P. Marsden, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, will present the second graduating class of 15 teacher-scholars who will be awarded the Master of Education degree with a specialization in Elementary Education. Dr. Jackie S. Ennis, professor of education and dean of the School of Education, and Dr. Ann Carper, assistant professor of education and director of the Master of Education Program will perform the Hooding of Graduates. Master of Education degree candidate Timothy J. Winks of Wilson will deliver remarks on behalf of the graduating class.

The Master of Education degree candidates include: Jonette Bailey Arnold of Bunn; Vanessa Janine Cox of Goldsboro; Susan Rebecca Mansfield of Greenville; Amanda Laine Joyner of Louisburg, Temple Hunter Creech of Rocky Mount, Serita Dawn Braswell, Charlene Jill Haynor, Michelle Delinda Newton, Tekicey Michelle Jones, and Timothy J. Winks of Wilson; Whitney Leigh Wall of Youngsville; and Renee Bell Adams, Lisa House Barham, Marne Wilson Watts, and Janine P. Wood of Zebulon.

About the speaker —

Prior to her current role as chief academic officer for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, Dr. Garland served as the executive director of the North Carolina State Board of Education. In her thirty-plus years in education, she has also served as a teacher in the Harnett County School System, a D.P.I. consultant in content and gifted education,  director of middle schools/arts/and gifted education for Alamance-Burlington Schools, and as associate superintendent for curriculum and instruction for Orange County Schools. Dr. Garland completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, followed by a Master of Education degree from Campbell University, and a Doctorate in Education Leadership from North Carolina State University. She serves on a number of boards and commissions.
