Degrees Offered:
Bachelor of Science (B.S.)

Overview

The Birth-Kindergarten (B-K) program is offered entirely through Accelerated Professional Programs (APP). Students may major in Birth-Kindergarten, add it to an existing teacher license, or choose it as Cognate Studies when majoring in elementary education or special education within APP. During the final semester of the program, candidates are placed in a student-teaching setting full time and, upon successful completion of the program, are eligible for licensure from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. For individuals with existing licensure, student teaching will be waived.

B-K with Teacher Certification Transfer Program

Barton College welcomes qualified students transferring from the North Carolina Community College System in the Early Childhood Associate of Applied Science Degree to pursue a Bachelor of Science Degree in Birth to Kindergarten with Teacher Certification (B-K) at Barton College. Credit for classes in the Early Childhood Program at the community college will transfer to Barton as detailed in the program of study and in the Birth-Kindergarten Course Equivalency Guide.

Transferability for Courses Completed at the Community College

Students who complete an AAS Degree in Early Childhood or Early Childhood students who do not complete a degree or the core curriculum approved under the Statewide Articulation Agreement must, upon enrolling at Barton, satisfy all of Barton’s general college requirements and education requirements. The courses offered in the North Carolina Community College System listed in the Birth-Kindergarten Course Equivalency Guide will transfer in fulfillment of Barton’s general college requirements and education requirements, as indicated, if the grade earned is C or better.

The maximum number of hours accepted from a two-year college is 64 semester hours. Students meeting the requirements of the Birth to Kindergarten Transfer Program of Study will transfer to Barton with 64 semester hours of credit and junior status provided the student has a GPA of at least 2.5.
