Overview
Barton’s Athletic Training program gives you a comprehensive foundation in athletic training that includes a thorough understanding of human anatomy, physiology, injuries, illnesses and principles of exercise science. As a result, you’ll have the knowledge and training to serve as part of a complete healthcare team where you’ll play a critical role in preventing, recognizing, managing, and rehabilitating injuries.
Special Features
Barton’s Athletic Training Education Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education. As an athletic training major at Barton, you’ll be prepared for the national Board of Certification examination, which you must pass to become a nationally Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC). Students also have an opportunity to take courses related to strength and conditioning. Athletic training students may participate in one intercollegiate sport. The program stresses extensive hands-on learning. In addition to coursework, you’ll accumulate hours of clinical experience.

- Introduction to Sports Studies
- Psychological and Sociological Bases of Sport

- Organization and Administration of Physical Education and Sport Programs

The athletic training program is highly selective and requires an application and interview process. Selection is prior to the start of the second semester of the sophomore year. Students may meet all of the requirements and not be selected into the program due to space limitations.
Clinical Sites
In athletic training, internships are called clinical rotations. Our students have had clinical rotations at the following sites:

- Wayne Memorial Hospital
- Wilson Immediate Care
- Wilson Orthopedic Surgery and Neurology Associates
Scholarships and Financial Aid
In addition to the awards the Athletics Department offers athletic training students, many scholarships are available to athletic training majors through professional associations.

You may choose to continue your education in athletic training at the graduate level and pursue a master’s degree or doctorate, or you may decide to continue your professional training and go on to athletic training, physical therapy, or physician assistant school. Recent Barton graduates have attended:
