“Take Back The Night” Scheduled at Barton College on Tuesday, Oct. 4

WILSON, N.C. — Members of the Wilson community are invited to join Barton College’s faculty, staff, and students for “Take Back The Night: Shatter the Silence, Stop the Violence,” scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 4. Co-sponsored by Barton College Student Health Services and the Wesley Shelter of Wilson, “Take Back The Night” is an annual program that raises awareness about domestic violence. The event is open to the public at no charge, and the community is encouraged to attend.

On Tuesday evening, participants will gather at 6:15 p.m. at the fountain in front of Hamlin Student Center for a Candlelight Vigil. The vigil, protesting violence in homes and in schools, will begin with brief remarks by Amy Bridgers, director of Lee Student Health Center at Barton College, as well as Lynne White, executive director of the Wesley Shelter in Wilson. Other speakers include Barton’s counselor Heather Brewer, students Mariah White and Kiri Neuson and a representative from the Wesley Shelter. These remarks will be followed by a musical performance by the Barton College Sign Choir. A member of the Student Government Association will read names of those who have lost their lives this year as a result of domestic violence.

In memory of the lives lost each month, a candle will be extinguished by representatives from the following groups: women’s basketball team, women’s soccer team, the Barton College Student Government Association, Sigma Sigma Sigma, Delta Zeta, Phi Mu, Campus Compassion, Barton College Association of Nursing Students, Barton College Sign Choir, Athletic Training Club, Alpha Phi Omega, and the Barton College Gospel Choir.

Participants, who are able, will walk the Barton Mile around the perimeter of the campus with glow sticks in hand to honor those who have been affected by domestic abuse.
