WILSON, N.C. — Broadway star Alan Campbell returns to Wilson to star in “Oh, What A Night!” produced by Lauren Kennedy and co-sponsored by Theatre at Barton and Hot Summer Nights at the Kennedy in Raleigh.
The show opens Barton College’s third theatre season in the Lauren Kennedy and Alan Campbell Theatre on the Barton campus with performances scheduled for Saturday evening, Sept. 3, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday afternoon, Sept. 4, at 3 p.m.
For three years, Theatre at Barton has partnered with Raleigh’s acclaimed professional theatre company, Hot Summer Nights at the Kennedy led by Lauren Kennedy and Alan Campbell. As a result of this partnership, Theater at Barton has opened each season with a co-production featuring the best of Broadway and local talent, while Barton students have had the opportunity to participate in full-scale summer theatre seasons, working side-by-side with leading industry professionals.
“Two years ago, we made history by opening Barton’s new Lauren Kennedy and Alan Campbell Theatre with the landmark, world premiere musical, ‘Drift, by Jeremy Schonfeld, which has since gone on to win numerous awards and garner tremendous critical acclaim,” shared Adam Twiss, director of Theatre at Barton. “Last year, we produced the riveting and remarkable one-woman musical, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘Tell Me On A Sunday,’ starring Lauren Kennedy; critics and viewers are still describing that performance as ‘absolute perfection’ and ‘unparalleled.’
“This year, we open our season with something a little different: a concert event that we are calling ‘Oh, What A Night!’” Twiss continued. “This thematic concert features musical selections from some of Broadway’s biggest shows … that’s literally ‘biggest’ … in both production scale and budget. These are shows that we could never fully mount (without taking tremendous artistic liberties) within our black-box theatres at Hot Summer Nights or Barton … but mostly, it provides us with the opportunity to do something that is pure fun for the performers and audience alike. We have brought together amazing talent for this show, Broadway stars Alan Campbell, Ray Walker, and Lisa Jolley, alongside favorite local stand-outs Yolanda Rabun, Dale Sanders, and many more. I have no doubt you will enjoy this unique event as much as we have enjoyed developing it for you. It’s another fantastic kick-off to our theatre season here at Barton.”
Tickets for “Oh, What A Night!” are $22 for adults, $18 for non-Barton students, seniors 65 and older, and military, and $5 for Barton students and employees if purchasing online, or free at the door with a Barton ID. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance at 866-811-4111 or by visiting www.barton.edu/theatre.
